Custom CNC Machined Carbon Fiber Mounting Plate Details
FlexiTurn CNC-routes star-shaped multi-arm 3K twill-weave quasi-isotropic CFRP mounting brackets for robotics, UAV platforms, and precision industrial equipment. Each part carries a central drilled hole group and through-mounting holes at every arm tip.
Performance depends largely on routing quality: edge delamination, hole-wall fiber pull-out, and central-to-outer hole position consistency. Without proper tooling and fixturing, CFRP routing can result in bottom-side splintering and hole-group drift.
FlexiTurn minimizes these risks with PCD cutters, vacuum fixturing over phenolic backing board, and documented feed-and-speed parameters — delivering controlled edge quality, repeatable hole-pattern location, and consistent part-to-part accuracy from prototype to medium-volume production.
Machining Process & CapabilitiesFlexiTurn performs all core CFRP operations in-house. Tooling geometry, spindle speed, and feed per tooth are fixed for woven carbon fiber composite to minimize delamination and preserve the cosmetic laminate face.
- 3-Axis CNC Routing & Contouring: Outer arm profiles and panel outline are routed from 3K twill-weave CFRP sheet held under a vacuum table over a phenolic sacrificial backing board. PCD compression cutters control top- and bottom-surface splintering across all contour passes. The cosmetic weave face is routed face-down or under protective film to avoid tool-mark damage.
- Precision Drilling: Arm-tip through-holes and central mounting holes are drilled with carbide step drills at controlled feed rates to minimize exit delamination. Heat-set threaded inserts (standard M3/M4) are installed after routing where threaded fastening is required; direct tapping of CFRP is not offered as a standard process.
- Edge Finishing: Routed edges are deburred to remove micro-splintering without rounding functional bearing surfaces. Edge banding or edge sealing is available on request to prevent fiber raveling in humid environments.
- Laminate Sourcing: FlexiTurn stocks 3K twill-weave quasi-isotropic CFRP laminate in standard thicknesses. Plain-weave CFRP, G10/FR4 fiberglass laminate, and phenolic composite sheet are available on request. Custom layup and autoclave-cured structural panels are outside our scope and are not quoted.
FlexiTurn sources certified composite laminate stock from qualified suppliers, with material data sheets and batch traceability for every order.
- Standard material: 3K twill-weave, quasi-isotropic CFRP laminate, black epoxy matrix
- Available on request: 3K plain-weave CFRP, G10/FR4 fiberglass laminate, phenolic composite sheet
- Standard thicknesses: 1.0 mm, 1.5 mm, 2.0 mm, 3.0 mm, 4.0 mm, 5.0 mm
- General contour tolerance: ±0.10 mm on outer profile for parts ≤ 200 mm overall
- Hole-pattern location tolerance: ±0.05 mm between arm-tip holes and central hole group relative to a common datum, on panels ≤ 200 mm
- Edge quality: Minimal visible interlayer separation on cut edges; micro-splintering within industry-acceptable limits
- Surface finish: Raw 3K twill weave preserved on cosmetic face; routed edges with controlled finish
- Standard panel size: 600 mm × 600 mm (standard stock CFRP sheet); maximum routed panel dimension 600 mm × 400 mm per single vacuum-fixtured setup
Why Choose FlexiTurn
PCD Tooling for Consistent Edge Quality
Many machine shops route carbon fiber with uncoated carbide that dulls rapidly when routing CFRP, producing frayed edges and interlaminar splintering that requires hand-sanding. FlexiTurn uses PCD cutters for every contour and drill pass, holding edge geometry consistent across the production run without the rapid degradation seen with standard carbide tooling.
Vacuum Hold-Down Plus Phenolic Backing BoardWithout sacrificial backing, the bottom side of a routed CFRP panel can splinter outward as the cutter exits — particularly at unsupported arm tips. FlexiTurn holds every panel on a vacuum table over a phenolic backing board, so both top and bottom edges route cleanly and arm-tip holes exit with minimal delamination.
Cosmetic Face Protection During RoutingThe visible 3K twill weave is part of the product’s commercial value, but a single tool pass across the cosmetic face ruins it. FlexiTurn routes cosmetic-face panels either face-down or under protective film, preserving the as-supplied weave finish without secondary sanding or touch-up.
Heat-Set Inserts Instead of Tapped HolesDirect tapping of CFRP can cause thread stripping and delamination under normal tightening torque. FlexiTurn specifies heat-set threaded inserts as the standard fastening method, reducing the most common field-failure mode on carbon fiber mounting plates.
Defined Scope of SupplyFlexiTurn is a CNC routing service for stock CFRP laminate. We do not quote custom layup panels, autoclave-cured structures, flight-certified components, or molded carbon fiber parts. Saying so up front keeps engineering time on projects we can deliver to specification.
Scalable From Prototypes to Medium VolumeLow-volume prototypes are routed directly from laminate sheet with no dedicated tooling cost; medium-volume production runs use optimized panel nesting to reduce material waste and per-part cycle time.
Additional CNC Machining CapabilitiesBeyond CFRP plates, FlexiTurn also machines precision parts in aluminum, stainless steel, brass, copper, and engineering plastics. We can consolidate your composite brackets plus machined metal adapters and housings from a single source.
How to Proceed- Submit your 2D (PDF/DWG) or 3D (STEP/IGES) CAD files, along with laminate type, sheet thickness, hole-pattern datum, tolerance requirements, cosmetic face designation, order quantity, and operating environment.
