When purchasing AISI 316/316L (1.4401 / 1.4404) austenitic stainless steel, overseas buyers frequently face high material unit costs, expensive shipping fees for full plates or long bars (paying freight on dead-weight scrap), severe tool wear and work hardening caused by tough molybdenum-alloyed steel, and a lack of local high-precision cold profiling equipment. The key difference is that 316 contains 2%–3% molybdenum (Mo). This addition drastically improves pitting resistance, crevice corrosion resistance, and performance in chloride-rich environments (such as seawater, salt spray, and halogen media) compared to 304. Furthermore, 316L (low carbon, C ≤ 0.03%) prevents intergranular corrosion caused by carbide precipitation during welding, making 316/316L the industry standard for marine environments, aggressive chemical processing, and sanitary pharmaceutical applications.
